My Practice

My practice is located near downtown Napa, in the heart of the Napa Valley. I work with adults and teenagers. I help people dealing with stress, relationship issues, and difficult life transitions, but also more serious problems like depression, anxiety, trauma, and addiction. Whether you are seeking long-term therapy for a disabling illness or a more short-term adjustment to improve your efficiency and quality of life, I will tailor our work together to fit your needs and goals.

While I have extensive experience with severe mental illness, the clients who come to my practice tend to be overall functional people who are seeking help in overcoming roadblocks to their continued success.

In addition to office appointments in Napa, I am also available via online sessions to clients throughout both California and Florida through Wecounsel. Please visit Wecounsel at https://www.wecounsel.com/faq/. To see my personal profile and to schedule an online session with me, please go to https://portal.wecounsel.com/directory/adamk.

About Me

Education, Training and Experience

I am a licensed psychotherapist with years of experience working with a range of problems and disorders. I earned my Master’s Degree from UC Berkeley’s School of Social Welfare — one of the top Social Work programs in the country. I graduated in 2008 with a concentration in Community Mental Health. Previous to that, I earned my BA from the University of San Francisco, where I double-majored in Psychology and Philosophy. Upon graduation, I was named Outstanding Psychology Student of the Year and was awarded the Dean’s Medal for Excellence in the Arts, the highest honor given to a graduating senior.

My previous work experience includes serving as the Clinical Coordinator for an inpatient addiction treatment facility where I was also primary therapist for First-Responder patients (police, firefighters, and military). I have also worked as a therapist and evaluator for the San Francisco Unified School District. Currently, I am a Department Chief at Napa State Hospital, an inpatient psychiatric treatment facility.

I am comfortable working with and treating a wide array of people and conditions. However, I consider my areas of specialty to be addiction and trauma. I have years of experience working with substance abuse and other forms of addiction in inpatient and outpatient settings. I am also a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, and have specialty experience working with First Responders, treating our nation’s police officers, firefighters, corrections officers, and veterans based on their unique strengths and needs.

My Approach

I consider myself to be a Cognitive-Behavioral therapist with a Humanistic, Client-Centered approach. If you don’t know what that means, don’t worry. My entire therapeutic approach is based around your needs, your experiences, and your strengths. I won’t assume I understand your situation, but instead will listen and get to know your unique experience. I won’t dictate answers or determine your path, but I will be honest with you about what I see. And I’m not afraid to tell you when something isn’t working.

Ultimately I believe that the most important factor in therapy is the relationship between the client and the therapist - a relationship which transcends theories and frameworks. Thus, while I take pride in my education and experience, I am most proud of my ability to engage my clients, make them feel comfortable, and earn their trust. Research shows that our relationship will determine whether or not we will succeed in finding the way to a happier, healthier, and more effective you.
